Although pH sounds like a term straight out of a chemistry class, it plays a pivotal role in how our bodies look and behave. pH stands for Power of Hydrogen and is used to determine the acidity levels of liquids, including our body fluids.

pH is measured on a scale of 0-14 with 7 as the neutral point. A pH less than 7 is considered acidic and liquids (including body fluids) with a pH higher than 7 are alkaline. While the pH of water is 7, the human blood is slightly alkaline, with a pH of 7.34–7.45.

While your body works round the clock to maintain a healthy pH balance, everyday stress and intake of unhealthy food leads to build-up of toxins in the bloodstream. This disrupts the body’s natural ability to drive out acid waste, leading to health problems such as weight gain, lethargy, lack of sleep, indigestion, poor skin and nail health, and recurrent unexplained fatigue.

Furthermore, consuming acidic foods excessively leads to concentration of acids in the body, which, in the longer run, can give rise to liver disease, kidney malfunction, respiratory problems, skin disease and recurrent infections.

Build-up of acids in the body leads to fat accumulation and hampers your weight loss goals. When your body receives excess of acidic foods, at first it tries to flush out toxins through urine. However, when you continue to eat acid-causing foods, the body is unable to process all the additional acid at the same rate. As a result, the acidic waste begins to collect in body fluids and fat cells, bringing the fat-burning process to a stand-still.

In turn, your diet and exercise regimen suffers a setback as you are not able to shed the extra weight despite your best efforts.

Accumulation of acidic waste in the body affects metabolism, disturbs cholesterol levels and accelerates aging, all of which contribute to an unhealthy physical and mental disposition.

Some Common Acidic and Alkaline Foods


Alkaline foods help neutralize acids in the body. Therefore, some experts recommend a diet consisting of 65% alkaline foods and 35% acidic foods. You can achieve this by having more of fresh fruits and vegetables and reducing your intake of colas, coffee, tea, meat and processed foods.

Acidic Foods:

Meats, eggs, fish, soft drinks, artificial beverages such as energy drinks and soft drinks, tea, coffee, alcohol, fruit juice, soy milk, pickles, vinegar, white bread, pasta, cheese, processed food, fast food, distilled water.

Myth: Lemon is an acidic food because of how it tastes.

Fact: Lemon may be acidic to taste, however it renders an alkalizing effect on the body.

Alkaline Foods:

Apple, strawberry, grapefruit, grapes, pears, mango, banana, dates, sweet potato, blueberries, pineapple, lemon, cucumber, carrots, onions, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, radish, flaxseed, green tea, almonds, legumes, tap water, sea water.

Test your body’s pH levels

A pH level of 7.1 to 7.5 means your body is pH balanced. To know if your body is too acidic or too alkaline, you can take a simple test using your saliva:

Swallow the saliva in your mouth and wait until fresh saliva accumulates. Spit onto the colored end of a litmus strip, which will change color based on the level of acid in your saliva. Litmus paper and color reference sheets (pH strips) are easily available at medical stores.

Alternatively, symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, lethargy, dull skin, brittle nails, and unexplained mood swings may also indicate that your pH needs your immediate attention.
