How To Buy The Right Treadmill For You?
Treadmills help in burning more amount of fat as you stand on a treadmill and carry your own body weight. Studies also say that the treadmill is better than other fitness equipments as it involves running and walking that come naturally to us.
So, are you planning to buy a treadmill? This post makes a humble attempt at guiding you to buy a treadmill.
The pricing of the treadmill
The cost depends on whether you are going for Indian brands or international brands. You need to plan your budget and look out for discounts and offers. Treadmills can range from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 6,00,000!!
How much should be spent for a home treadmill?
A treadmill is an investment to your good health. If you want to buy for home you need to buy the one that will last longer. So, you need to spend a little extra money. A good walking treadmill that can withstand regular usage starts at Rs. 30,000. At the same time let me tell you that you need not spend a lakh on a home treadmill meant for occasional walking.
Before you purchase a treadmill, think about your requirements.
Ensure the following:
-The no. of people who will use the treadmill
– Should it have running or walking programs included?
– Is a heart rate monitor needed?
– Need a foldable treadmill if space is an issue?
-What important feature you want in your treadmill?
Remember that as per your needs the rates will vary.
Ok, so getting into the details, while purchasing your treadmill check out the horse power (HP) ratings. HP ratings can get confusing. Look out for ‘continuous duty rating’ and buy one with 1.5 to 2.5 HP ‘continuous duty.’ The ‘peak duty’ rating is something less valuable. The ‘treadmill duty’ rating falls between continuous duty and peak duty.
Try buying a treadmill that has the longest warranty on the motor – it is more advisable to purchase a treadmill with a minimum 5 year motor warranty. You can go in for DC (direct current) motors as they are quieter.
Test it for stability and the ride it offers
Test the treadmill you want to buy with your workout shoes and workout clothes on. If the ride is shaky or jerky, it is a big no! The hand rails should provide you support and not block the motion of your arm. The belt ought to be wide and long enough for you.
Working out on the treadmill may get monotonous and boring. It is better that you choose a model that has programmable workouts that vary the pace and incline. It would be better if it has a pulse monitor and a water bottle holder. If you can afford, you can go in for the ones that have a video or audio player.
For occasional use
For occasional walkers, a treadmill shorter in length with an 18 inch wide belt with a medium sized motor will do.
For more people
If more than one person is going to use the home treadmill then the usage will double and so will the cost. Here is a rough list of costs:
Two walkers: Buy one around Rs 65,000
Two joggers: Buy one around Rs 1 lac
Two runners: Buy one around Rs 1.5- 2 lacs
Sounds expensive no doubt but you need to buy a treadmill that will last longer.
Belt size – It should be at least 48 inches long and 16 inches wide.
Speed – If you want to run, buy a treadmill that goes up to 10 MPH
Incline – Buy a treadmill with an incline that goes up to 20 percent.
Cushioning – The running bed should be shock absorbing and the belt shouldn’t move around every time your foot strikes.
Stability – Make sure that the machine doesn’t give jerks as they can cause knee injuries, lower back pain and cervical problem.
Control panel – It should be within your reach and user friendly. There should be an emergency stop button.
