Most of you who follow low carb lifestyle would have faced the problem of constipation. Some of the carbs that are prohibited on a low carb lifestyle are responsible for you going to the Loo without much efforts in the morning, if you know what I mean 😉

Drink loads of water

There is no exception to this rule. Drink as much water as possible. Usually people say 8-10 glasses of water suffice but I think it’s way too less, especially on a low carb lifestyle. Staying hydrated does help to curb constipation to a great extent.

Pay attention to fiber

You could be 100% carnivore, but it’s important to have fiber in your meals. I know of people who follow completely non vegetarian low carb high fat lifestyle that keeps carbs almost zero end of day. But it does cause a bit of problem if you are prone to gastric issues or constipation. Include low carb vegetables like spinach, cauliflower, cabbage etc to your meals for much needed fiber. Fiber is the best weapon for constipation.

You could also add a fiber supplement to your diet. A fiber supplement can ease your bowel movements without adding carbohydrates. Phylum husk and flax seeds are great examples of fiber supplement/

Take probiotics

Probiotics are important for health of gut flora/bacteria. They reduce the amount of increase the presence of healthy bacteria of time that food stays in the bowel. Adding probiotics is a sure shot way to improve digestive system and aid weight loss.

Avoid iron supplements

Iron supplements are known to cause constipation. So avoid using iron supplements and also multi vitamins that contain huge dose of iron.

Avoid alcohol

Alcohol is a diuretic that reduces body fluid and causes constipation owing to low water level in organs and bloodstream. Ideally, salt, sugar and coffee are also diuretics. But salt and coffee are somehow unavoidable in low carb lifestyle!

You could take help by taking wheat grass juice which contains chlorophyll. It is a natural laxative and helps bowel movement. Magnesium supplements are also sweared by people who follow strict LCHF lifestyle.

Eat smaller portions

Eating smaller portions keeps digestive system working smoothly. It prevents constipation to a great deal!

Up your fat

Make sure that you eat optimum fat while on low carb lifestyle. If you don’t eat enough fat, you would probably be doing low carb and low calorie diet together which could send your body to starvation mode. It would hurt your metabolism, feel weak and would be on your way to give up low carb lifestyle.

Exercising regularly is extremely important. Do workout at least 3-4 times a week. If you are obese and can’t workout, walk and walk. Walking guides the waste to intestinal tract and helps remove it from the body eventually!
