How To Make Your Fruits And Veggies Pesticide Free?
On our blog we always talk of eating fresh fruits, veggies and greens. True, they are very good for health and should be a part of your daily diet but do you know that they are sprayed with harmful pesticides? About 65% of samples of produce analyzed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture have pesticide residues in them. Unless you buy organic produce, there are chance that you are ingesting lots of chemicals with every bite of the ‘healthy’ fruits and veggies. Public awareness regarding the level of exposure to toxic chemicals in produce is being created by The Environmental Working Group (EWG). Every year they publish a list of the least and the most contaminated fruits and veggies.
The following are on their list of most contaminated fruits and veggies:
- Sweet bell peppers
- Cherry tomatoes
You have to be careful while consuming the above fruits and veggies as they have a higher concentration of pesticides than other produce items. For instance, 99% of apples contained at least one pesticide residue.
The fruits and veggies that hold the least amount of pesticides are as follows:
- Sweet corn
- Frozen sweet peas
- Sweet potatoes
Avocados are the cleanest as they have only 1% of detectable pesticides.
Ways to Get Rid Of Pesticide Residue From Fruits And Veggies
There is an easy and cost-effective trick to get rid of the nasty pesticides. You can wash the fresh fruits and veggies in a solution of white vinegar and water. It would be better if you soaked your veggies and fruits in the solution (it should have 10 percent vinegar and 90 percent water). Let the fruits and veggies remain soaked for 15 to 20 minutes. When you take the out of the solution, you will notice that the water in the bowl is dirty. Rinse your fruits and veggies in fresh water and you are ready to go! However, this method is not for fragile fruits like berries. They have a porous skin that can get damaged when soaked in vinegar. With other fruits like apple there won’t be an issue. You can also use lemon juice instead of vinegar if you wish.
The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) says that washing your fruits and veggies with 2% salt water is also helpful. It removes the pesticides that normally appear at the surface.
You should be washing your fruits and veggies as chemicals can be present in crevices which are hard to wash. CSE claims that if done properly, even washing with cold water can be helpful in removing 70 to 80 percent of the pesticides. It becomes essential to invest some time in making your food free of toxins as you don’t want to end up with a toxic fruit salad :P. By being careful in washing your fruits and veggies you are protecting the health of your family and that is of prime importance.
Try going in for organic fruits and veggies. Though expensive, they are not grown by using harmful pesticides. Read more about purchasing organic food on budget here.
