Hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid is a common disorder which is raising at an acute speed. Dry skin, slow heart rate, dry hair, unexplained weight gain, greater sensitivity to cold are other few symptoms of hypothyroidism. It happens when your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough hormones.
Our thyroid gland is located in the front lower part of our neck which releases two hormones that control major bodily function and organs. It takes control on heart, brain, kidneys, liver and skin and also regulates our body temperature and heartbeat. It also helps in digesting food. These hormones affect almost every part of the body from the heart to brain and from muscles to the skin. Due to hypothyroidism, our body slows down. In result body produces less energy and becomes lethargic.
Hypothyroidism has become an ordinary disease and found in millions of people in America. The main issue is that majority of people are not aware of it because the early symptoms of the disease are different and multiple. This disease is not identifiable as its symptoms imitate the symptoms of everyday life. Many times, millions of thyroid cases are mistaken for other disorder or remain undiagnosed. Approximately around 10 million Americans have this common medical condition. In fact, as many as 10 percent of women may have some degree of thyroid hormone deficiency, and 12 percent of Americans will develop a thyroid disorder in their lifetimes. Especially women with older age are more likely to develop hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism can also be developed if you have a close family member who has an autoimmune disorder.
Pregnant women suffering from hypothyroidism can affect the developing baby. The baby receives thyroid hormones from the mother in starting three months. The hypothyroidism mother is unable to provide the correct of hormones to the baby which leads to many problems. Thus, the deficiency in developing baby leads to the mental problem. Many things can put you at risk for a torpid hypothyroidism, from genetic predispositions to an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, a condition that occurs in 80 percent of those with hypothyroidism in which the immune system attacks and destroy the thyroid by producing antibodies. Myxedema is the life threatening condition of hypothyroidism due to extremely low levels of thyroid hormones which can lead the person to lose consciousness or go to coma.
Thyroid can be detected with a simple blood test and thyroid can be won over with right prescription. Lower than normal T4 levels mean the person is suffering from hypothyroidism. And if someone is having increase thyroid stimulating hormone while having normal T4 levels, it is the condition of subclinical or mild hypothyroidism, which is the early stage of hypothyroidism.
January is celebrated as National Thyroid Awareness Month, where Eat This, Not That! is spread. This month deals with the awareness and symptoms of thyroid and how to cope with it. Thyroid hormones are developed by iodine and our body doesn’t produce iodine. Iodine salt and iodine rich foods like fish, eggs, seaweed should be added in the diet.
