Importance of detoxification and how to detoxify
You must have heard the term ‘detoxification’ often. If you think it is just for weight loss then you are wrong. Periodic detoxification is essential for our health. Read on to find more about detoxification.
Why detoxification is important?
Our environment is full of pollution. So many chemicals are released into the air and water that make them toxic. As if air and water pollution was not enough, the pesticides found in food are causing a lot of harm.
Do you know that apart from pesticides, our foods contain harmful additives? Almost 3/4th of our food including fruits, vegetables, and grains are genetically modified. Our food is also known to have high doses of radiation.
Even non-veg is not safe as the meats come from animals that are given growth hormones and steroids to increase their market value.
Organic food cannot be considered safe either as they get polluted indirectly by groundwater or by rain on organic crops.
In a nutshell, it can be said that the water we drink, the air we inhale and the food we eat is all directly or indirectly polluted. When the toxins enter our body they cause imbalances in the body’s functioning. The toxic elements make our bodies their home and build up inside us.
I am not trying to scare you but this is the ugly truth.
We cannot stop what is happening around us. All we can do is take control of our own health. The above reasons are sufficient to make you think about detoxifying your body seriously.
How to detoxify?
After making you aware of the toxins inside and around us let me tell you the ways to release and prevent toxic build-up in the body.
Drink plenty of fluids
You hear this day in and day out but it is fact that consuming fluids is a great way to detoxify yourself. Here the term fluids refer to water, vegetable juices, and teas. It does not include milk, coffee, sugary fruit juice, or aerated beverages.
You need eight glasses of water in a day. It may sound clichéd but it is important that you keep yourself well hydrated. Preferably drink water before 7 pm as after that time your kidneys take rest after a long day’s work.
Sleep at 10 pm
You get the most detoxifying and healing sleep between 10 pm and 2 am. During these hours the body repairs the cells and gets rid of toxins.
Sweat it out
Perspiration or sweating is the body’s way to detoxify itself. You need to sweat at least 2 times a week and if possible every day as it releases toxins. If possible you can go in for a steam bath.
Avoid breathing through the mouth
Breathing needs to be done by the nose as it has a mechanism to warm, filter, and moisten the air inhaled. This process gets the air ready for the lungs. If you breathe through your mouth the air won’t get filtered and you will let pollutants in causing toxic build-up.
Brushing teeth and cleaning the tongue
Every morning you need to brush your teeth and clean your tongue. The tongue gets coated with a layer during the night that must get removed.
Drink green vegetable juice
Drinking green shakes or smoothies several times a week is a good habit as it is known to detoxify the system.
Consume vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals
Consume a lot of natural vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals from fruits and berries, sprouted grains, seaweed, and seeds. Try to get them fresh if possible. Vitamins and minerals are essential because they attach themselves to toxic chemicals in the body and are taken out of the body.
Get a massage
There is nothing as relaxing as a massage! It would be advisable to go in for a circulatory massage as it stimulates blood flow and squeezes out toxins from tissues and puts them into the blood. From the blood, the toxins are carried out of the body through urine and sweat. Get it done twice a month for the best results.
Fasting is connected with religious sentiments in India. Fasting detoxifies the body, now I know why people in the bygone era used to observe fasts regularly!
