Internet addiction is a rising health concern among youngsters these days. Teenagers are literally hooked to the internet. A lot of parents are complaining that their kids spend a lot of time online but they are not aware of the fact that their kid is suffering from internet addiction. This sort of addiction can affect one’s life drastically. You too are unable to stay away from the internet? Hmmm, you too can be a computer and internet addict.


Here are the common signs and symptoms you need to watch out for:

1) You are not social

You don’t meet your friends face to face. Most of your interactions with friends are done on social media such as Facebook and WhatsApp. You are turning down several invitations to actually meet up your friends face to face and socialize. At the same time, you are not spending time with your family in spite of staying at home. Sounds someone like you? Well, sorry to say you are addicted to social media but are not social in the real world.

2) You don’t take care of yourself

You have stopped taking care of yourself. You are so addicted that you have gone to the extent of skipping meals, not taking bath and also not paying heed to nature’s call. Why? Because you are always engrossed in playing games online or watching your favourite shows! Sometimes you binge watch TV shows on the internet. People look at you and say how badly groomed you are. Big reason to worry!

3) You are not productive at work

While at the office, you waste all your time online instead of tackling your work related assignments. Your productivity at work is suffering. Your deadlines are getting missed and you have been scolded for your poor performance at office. If all this is happening with you, you better wake up as you might end up losing your job.

4) You begin panicking when WiFi does not work

When you are in situation where you do not have access to the internet, you start feeling depressed and anxious. It makes you feel irritated too. These are internet withdrawal symptoms that can get so severe that your hands start shaking and you don’t know what to do with yourself! You feel as though everything has come to a standstill. These are signs of your addiction to the internet.

5) You have feelings of shame and guilt

You feeling very depressed and guilty because of spending way too much time online. In spite of this feeling you find it difficult to go offline! OMG! This is because staying online gives you feeling of happiness and contentment.

6) You have started telling lies

When your spouse, parents or friends complain about the amount of time you are spending online, you take a defensive route. You start lying about the time you spend online and make a lot of excuses.

7) There are physical symptoms too

Not many individuals know that online addiction has physical ailments such as headaches, drowsiness, insomnia, backaches, either weight gain or weight loss, blurry vision and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Surprised to know all this! Well, it is a wake-up call for those who are glued to the laptop or tab all the time.
