Can Iron Deficiency Cause Hearing Loss?

Does Iron Deficiency Cause Hearing Loss?

Hello All!!

Everyone knows that iron is essential for the human body but this is just a beginning in understanding the aspects of the role it has to play in human health. It has been well known that iron is the key component of hemoglobin that helps in shuttling oxygen throughout the body. Low levels of iron can lead to iron deficiency anemia. This deficiency affects more than 30 percent of Indian men and 50 percent of Indian women in their 30s and 40s.

Now we will talk of something that you don’t know about! It is the link between iron deficiency and hearing loss

The iron deficiency and hearing loss link!

Research says that people with iron deficiency anemia are two times more likely to have hearing loss when compared to adults who are non-anemic.

Usually hearing loss is associated with the use of earphones and headphones at high volumes. And that is why your parents used to shout at you for excessive usage of earphones when you were a kid. However, with the entry of iron deficiency in the scene it can be said that even those who play safe are at risk.

As mentioned above, researchers in the study were able to establish a link between iron deficiency anemia and hearing loss.

There are 3 types of hearing loss. Sensorineural loss is because of the damage to the inner ear or brain or because of the damage to the nerve that connects the two. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound is not able to travel through the ear. A combination of the two is called combined hearing loss.

In the study, researchers checked records of over 3 lakh adults and found that the chances of combined hearing loss was twice as high among those who were iron deficient anemic as compared to people who were not anemic. The study could not establish a direct link to conductive hearing loss but it discovered that iron deficient anemics were also twice as likely to end up with sensorineural hearing loss.

Can Iron Deficiency Cause Hearing Loss? How?

What You Should Not Put Into Your Ears

Iron deficiency anemia leads to disorders of the blood. They can cause serious damage to the delicate blood vessels in the inner ear and can give rise to problems in the nerve cell surrounding sheath. These factors put an individual at the high risk of developing sensorineural hearing loss that is linked to nerves connecting the ear. On the other hand, conductive loss occurs due to mechanical damage to the ear and is not directly linked with iron deficiency anemia.

By identifying the association between iron deficiency anemia and specific hearing loss, the finding increases the chances of early identification and treatment of the condition.

Now after knowing the consequences of iron deficiency anemia, it is a must that you add seafood, leafy greens and lentils to your diet. This way you will reduce the chances of suffering from iron deficiency.
