Is Wearing A Bra To Sleep Bad?

Is Wearing A Bra To Sleep Bad?

Hello girls!!

This post is exclusively for the girls out there. So, boys please excuse.

Let me begin with a brief history of bras.Women used to wear corsets before the 19th century. It was in the late 19th century that bras replaced corsets. By the end of the first world war, women were wearing brassieres. In the year 1910, a young girl by the name Mary Phelps Jacob, came up with a spectacular idea to make her own bra with just two silk hankies, some pink ribbon and a cord. The idea was hit! Every decade has witnessed some change or the other in brassieres.

Bra is wearing bra at night bad

Talking about today, you get so many varieties of bras that you may get confused when you go shopping for your inners. You have the push-up bras, padded ones, wired ones, T-shirt bras, bras for backless outfits etc etc. You may actually get spoilt with choices available. The 2000s have witnessed bras with floral designs or patterns. Such things do bring out one’s feminity!

Okay, so now it is time to answer the most commonly asked question regarding bras. Is wearing a bra to sleep bad?

It is often asked by women whether they should be wearing a bra to sleep or not. There have been rumours and myths that if you wear a bra to sleep, you may end up getting breast cancer :P. So, untrue! There is another one- wearing a bra to sleep can weaken breast tissue and cause sagging. Untrue again!

Only one thing is true. It just is not comfortable to sleep in one. There is no evidence directing towards any kind of negative health effects of wearing a bra while sleeping.

The breast cancer rumour

breast cancer

The breast cancer rumour cropped up in the year 1995 and it was believed that wearing tight-fitting brassieres can constrict the lymphatic system and can trap toxins inside us and can cause breast cancer. There is absolutely no scientific evidence to support this claim. A study concluded that there is could find no link between the risk of breast cancer and wearing a bra to sleep among postmenopausal women. The type of brassiere worn or the number of hours for which it is worn is not a matter of concern at all.

Wearing a brassiere to sleep has almost no benefits

Some women think that by providing support to the breasts at night they can prevent sagging. The real culprits behind sagging include:

  1. Time
  2. Gravity
  3. Pregnancy
  4. Breastfeeding

Women with a cup size bigger than D, might need to wear one for support at night. It might help them from preventing their breast from sagging before time. Women who have undergone a breast surgery need to wear a bra at night. It will help provide support and prevent the breasts from getting sore due to the recently done surgery.

If you really have to wear a bra to sleep, opt for one without an underwire and it should be a soft one. At times due to wrong selection of bra sizes, you may be wearing one that is too tight or that digs into your skin. It can cause skin irritation and can disrupt your sleep.

There are certain circumstances when one has to wear a bra even at night; such situations come up when you are travelling by train or by flight (a long flight). Otherwise, when you are at home you can take the liberty of sleeping without a bra, absolutely free of mind!
