You must be aware of the fact that not all diets are meant for weight loss. One such diet is the low residue diet which is prescribed for a number of health conditions and illnesses. The low residue diet helps in reducing the burden on your bowels by letting them work in a relaxed manner.

The diet is usually meant for the acute stages of gastrointestinal illnesses such as the following:

  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Diverticulitis
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Ulcerative colitis

According to the diet, you have to consume food that can be easily and completely digested. In a low residue diet, the fibre intake is less than 10 to 15 g a day. The reason behind this is that food high in fibre content makes the digestive system work harder and leaves a lot of residue.

Foods that you can consume on a low residue diet

1) Dairy, eggs, oils and fats

You are allowed to consume not more than 2 cups of milk. Other dairy products have to be consumed in moderation. You can drink lactose-free milk, almond milk, rice and soya milk. Eggs are also allowed in this diet. When it comes to oils and fats, you can use vegetable oils and mayo.

2) Veggies and fruits

 

You should only eat cooked veggies without their peels or seeds. The same goes for fruits. You can consume vegetable and fruit juice without the pulp. The best fruits for you are ripe bananas, honeydew melons and cantaloupes.

3) Cereals

You need to fill your bowl with refined cereals that are cooked. They need to be made out of wheat, corn and rice. You need to stay away from bran, oatmeal, granola and the ones containing dried foods and nuts in them. Those on a low-residue diet should consume refined wheat and stick to white rice instead of brown rice.

4) Non-veg food

Meats that are allowed in the low residue diet are the tender cuts of poultry, pork, lamb, fish and beef. In the seafood category, it is advised to consume clams and oysters. Whenever you eat meat and fish, you should have it stewed, creamed, broiled or roasted.

5) Cheese

Cheese lovers need not worry as those on a low-residue diet can easily include cheese in their meals. You can go in for cheddar cheese, American cheese, jack or Swiss cheese. The list also includes cottage cheese and cream cheese.

6) Sweets and desserts

 

You can add plain puddings, custard, plain cakes, pies and cookies to your diet. The only thing you need to be careful about when on a low residue diet is that your dessert should not contain any nuts or fruits. Fruit juice lollies and sherbet are also allowed. This means that those with a sweet tooth can also follow this diet happily.

Other foods that are allowed in a low-residue diet

  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Spices
  • Aerated beverages
  • Strained soups
  • Honey
  • Jelly

There is a conflict of opinion when it comes to beverages like tea and coffee. While one medical centre says that coffee and tea should not be consumed, there are others that allow it. If you are not too sure about it, you can check with your doctor to find out if you can drink tea or coffee.
