Can Magic mushrooms treat depression? Find out
We all have experienced some psychedelic experiences at some point in our lives for fun but did we hear of magic mushrooms having a similar effect or it treating depression? We may have heard about it and read. Let’s understand this in details. Mushroom is an unusual item among our many different food sources; the mushroom is a fungus, not a plant. Yet we eat it in various ways. It’s a different form of drug which may have a certain impact on patients suffering from mental health.
Magic mushrooms also known as psychedelic mushrooms consists of a compound named, ‘Hallucinogenic compound’ which acts as anti-depressant says research published in,‘The Lancet Psychiatry’. Psilocybin occurs naturally in some kinds of mushroom. Known for its psychedelic effects, recent studies suggest it could help people with alcohol dependence, end-of-life anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).So,what is exactly Psilocybin?
Psilocybin is present in a wide range of mushrooms, especially in the genus Psilocybe, though why it exists in the mushroom is not fully understood. When ingested, psilocybin metabolizes to Psilocybin, which resembles the chemical structure of serotonin — a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite, sleep, cognitive functions like memory and learning and feelings of pleasure. Since Psilocybin targets the serotonin receptors in the brain, it’s useful in treating depression which usually affects 6.7 percent of Americans precisely aged 12 years and over. Mood swings, dullness, low energy are all evident and is a sign of depression which can affect people of any age group. Though it’s not advisable for younger people to use it but studies have found that magic mushrooms have helped treat depression to a certain extent. One feels happy and is a mood lifter. People who suffer from prolonged diseases clinical depression or Parkinson’s (mostly older people) have felt better after a certain dosage of magic mushrooms. No severe effects have been found out.
These magic mushrooms cause differences in mood, perception and behavior that are commonly known as “tripping.” They are one of the most widely used recreational psychotropic drugs because they can be found in the wild or grown fairly easily and inexpensively. People tripping on mushrooms might see things in different colors or see patterns. The colors, sounds, tastes and textures may be distorted, while feelings and emotions intensify. It may seem like time has stopped somewhere and you are experiencing a different world altogether. Both are psychotropic drugs and act on the central nervous system to produce their effects.
Are they dangerous?
On trial, some people have shown signs of temporary nausea, passing headache or temporary anxiety. In totality, the condition improved in patients. Taking these mushrooms on a regular basis definitely not a god idea. One may feel euphoric for a moment but it may lead to nausea, dizziness, stomach problems, weakness in muscles, loss of appetite and numbness if taken in excess. Magic mushrooms may be dangerous and you may lose consciousness of what is happening around you. Though there is no evidence of death’s caused by magic mushrooms till date but Psilocybin remains a promising area of future research and that is an interesting area for us to look out for.
Hope you found this post of magic mushrooms useful!
