Natural Antibiotics In Your Kitchen
‘Antibiotic’- the word has been derived by combining two words ‘anti’ (against) and ‘biotic’ (life). Antibiotics aim at killing the bacteria in the body but there are two problems associated with synthetically manufactured antibiotics.
- Along with killing off the harmful bacteria in the body, they also kill off the good bacteria that help the immune system.
- Bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics over time, making them ineffective.
You can include natural antibiotics in your diet daily instead of waiting to fall sick and then consuming synthetic antibiotics! Natural antibiotics boost the immune system by killing bad bacteria and not harming the good bacteria. Also, the bad bacteria don’t develop resistance to the natural antibiotics.
Though you will need to consume antibiotics when you fall sick, consuming foods that are natural antibiotics will prevent you from falling sick too often.

Garlic contains allicin which is a compound similar to penicillin. Penicillin happens to be the main ingredient in many antibiotics. Garlic has anti-viral, anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties that help in preventing health conditions right from cough or a cold to heart disease and high blood pressure.
Onions and garlic are close relatives. Garlic belongs to the onion family. Onions have high amounts of phytonutrients which are compounds that flush out free radicals from the body.
Ginger is referred to as a universal medicine in Ayurvedic texts. Even more than half of the traditional Chinese medicines have ginger present in them. Ginger is known to heal, boost immunity and cure gastrointestinal problems.
Way back in time, soldiers used to directly apply honey on their wounds to treat them and also to prevent infections. Honey has been used all over the world as an antioxidant, antiseptic and painkiller. According to modern research, honey is known to actively battle more than sixty different strains of bacteria. It boosts immunity, detoxifies the blood and improves the function of the liver.
Cinnamon bark has essential oils that possess antifungal and antibacterial properties. Studies say that consuming cinnamon with honey is very much effective because they both combine to give a good anti-biotic effect.
A member of the cruciferous vegetable family, cabbage has loads of vitamin in it. Other famous members of this family are cauliflower and broccoli. Just one cup of cabbage provides 75 percent of the vitamin C needed in a day. Vitamin C fights lots of diseases.
A wide range of infections can be treated by turmeric as it has several antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It can treat external as well as internal treatments. Along with consuming it daily, you can also apply its paste on skin infections.

The fatty acids present in coconut oil possess antibacterial and antiviral properties. One of the acids, lauric acid, destroys harmful pathogens.
Oregano has 2 compounds thymol and carvacrol that are known to possess antibacterial and antifungal properties. These compounds help in treating skin conditions as they kill the bacteria that cause skin infections. Oil of oregano has concentrated antibacterial properties.
Basil or the well known tulsi is known to have several antibiotic properties. No wonder it is worshipped in India. Studies show that basil is effective in treating many strains of bacteria that have become resistant to medications. It is helpful in treating specific infectious bacteria that cause diarrhea.
11) Raw pickles
Fermented food like raw pickle and kimchi are probiotic in nature. Doctors usually recommend probiotics along with antibiotics. Why? It is so because probiotics encourage the growth of good bacteria in the system that improves immunity. Eating pickles is a good and tasty way of staying healthy 😉
