Pros And Cons Of OMAD
OMAD stands for One Meal A Day. Many people have started this way of eating only once a day and thereby claim to have lost weight.
The theory is that no one requires a standard calorie consumption of 2,500 calories a day in several sittings. Most people who lead sedentary lives need only a third of the calories mentioned which can be consumed in one eating session. There are so many who have lost weight following the OMAD diet.
What does research say?
On the other hand, there also exists research that says the opposite. It has been found that rats subjected to intermittent fasting develop a stiffened heart tissue and sap its ability to pump blood effectively.
For someone who is active, intermittent fasting presents uncomfortable challenges that include fatigue, nausea, mood swings and light-headedness.
Nutritionists say that one should follow a balanced diet with fruits and veggies, whole grains, and lean protein. This way you will get sufficient nutrients and maintain a healthy weight.
Cons of OMAD
Health experts against the OMAD diet say that initially it can lead to weight loss but it is not sustainable and you might land up eating more.
The weight will come back when you start eating normally again along with physical discomfort and internal damage. There can be symptoms like mouth ulcers, nausea and anxiety. There can also be an effect on sleep quality. Such food restriction for a long term can limit socializing and activity related to dining.
The brain and central nervous system need certain nutrients and calories to function well. Without sufficient nutrients and energy, both clarity and focus can get affected.
The other effect is on blood sugar. Lack of regular meals and snacks will cause an unbalance in blood sugar and spark cravings, brain fog and irritability.
The plain fact is that people love eating and the thoughts eating just once a day will make them feel deprived and derail them.
What should you do?
Diets are nothing but temporary quick fixes. They will work only when a lifestyle change is made. Fill yourself with energy giving foods that will lift up your spirits such as papaya, melon, avocado, eggplant and the like.
Also, keep yourself well hydrated throughout the day, sleep well and clock-in a good 7 to 8 hours. Ensure that you eat well right through the day. Ditch junk foods as they are unhealthy. Go in for whole, unprocessed foods. Make everything from scratch for maximum health benefits. Avoid drinking juices and focus more on eating whole fruits as you need the fibre for your digestive system to work optimally.
