Plantar Fasitis- Heel Pain

Your heel is mainly made up of two parts,
- The Plantar Fascia
- The Achilles Tendon

Plantar Fascia and Plantar Fasitis
Plantar Fascia is a fibrous ligament that connects your heel to the front of your r foot. It supports the whole foot and helps you walk. When the Plantar Fascia swells up it causes strain. Repeated strain on the swollen ligament will result in tiny tears. Though small, these tears are multiple and add to the pain. This condition is called Plantar Fasitis. Plantar Fasitis can be a onetime condition, but if your heel is under constant pressure, it can be chronic.
Am I at risk of developing Plantar Fasitis?
Since all of us stand on our feet for long stretches some time or the other; no one can guarantee that you won’t experience any kind of heel pain ever. However, orthopedics point out that those who have high arches in their foot or have flat feet are at higher risk of developing the condition. Tight calf muscles is another factor. People who require to be on their feet for long hours without breaks may also develop chronic Plantar Fasitis. Salesmen, sportsmen, construction workers, dancers, health care workers, models, policemen, often suffer from varied levels of heel pain.
Bad shoe selection and poor shoe wearing habits are also contributing factors. Chronic heel pain sufferers are advised to wear orthopedic shoes on a regular basis.
What are the symptoms of Plantar Fasitis
- If you are suffering from Plantar Fasitis you may experience a burning sensation under your heels.
- Some people may feel sever pain. Other people report continuous tingling.
- You may feel the pain first thing in the morning when you wake up. The pain generally subsides as you go about your day, as the ligament loosens up and swelling is reduced. As pressure develops on the heel over the day, the pain comes back at night when you’re in bed ready to sleep.
If you are suffering from increasing pain in your heal for months, you may have developed Plantar Fasitis.
What can cause Plantar Fasitis?
The main cause of this condition is pressure on your heel. Our heels are designed to sustain a certain level of pressure. When pressure on your heel exceeds this level, the ligament swells up and you end up screaming with pain. Since all of us have different thresholds of pain, the point at which the pressure gets too much will vary. So if you are used to wearing stilettoes for twelve hours a day you may not feel any pain on your heels if you wear them for a little longer. But if a person is used to wearing flat shoes, she may start feeling pain on her heels after two hours of wearing high heeled sandals.
A rigorous exercise regime can also exert pressure on the base of your heels and may lead to unbearable pain. Continuously putting extra stress on your feet will result in chronic heel pain.
Prevention and Cure
Orthopedics recommend regular stretching exercises for your joints and calves; especially if you work for long hours standing on your feet. This will help in loosening up and releasing tension in your heel muscles, and will prevent swelling and tears.
For people who can’t avoid long hours of standing, investing in comfortable orthopedic shoes will be worthwhile. These shoes are available easily in any medical store and you won’t require a medical prescription to buy them. These shoes have cushioned heels which absorb tension. You can also buy shoe inserts which you can use by placing them in your regular shoes. Proper footwear will give your feet support and will prevent stress on the heels.
Foot rubs and massages will also decrease the severity of Plantar Fasitis. For people with chronic pain, regular visits to a physiotherapist become necessary. If you suffer from Plantar Fasitis on a regular basis, going to the doctor should be a priority. Short term treatments like creams and sprays will not completely cure the condition. In fact, delayed treatment can increase the severity of the condition and can lead to other foot problems.
