Hangovers and its unpleasant after effects is the worst part about drinking alcohol. Though, it severity varies from person to person, but it continues to remain a regretful phase. Here’s where you can find help to prevent hangovers or make them less severe.
Moderation is the word
The amount of alcohol consumed is directly related to the severity of the hangover. Drinking in moderation, or not at all, is the single best way to prevent a hangover.
Avoid Drinks with Congeners
Congeners are basically toxic chemicals which are produced in small amounts when alcohol is processed. Some well-known congeners are methanol, isopentanol and acetone.
Higher the amount of congeners, higher is the intensity and frequency of hangovers. Bourbon whiskey is exceptionally high in congeners. Other drinks high in congeners include whiskey, cognac, and tequila. Colorless drinks such as vodka, gin and rum, contain relatively low levels of congeners. Vodka it is! It contains almost no congeners at all.
Have a Drink the next Morning
As paradoxical as it may seem, you can really treat a hangover by having another drink the next morning. The basic idea behind this that it inhibits the conversion process of previous day’s alcohol into formalaldehyde, responsible for hangover.
Having said so, this practice is strongly discouraged as it is often associated with problem drinking. After all, it’s not worth turning into an alcoholic just to cure a day’s hangover.
Drink Plenty of Water
Alcohol, being diuretic causes dehydration leading to symptoms like thirst, headache, fatigue and a dry mouth. You can avoid this situation by drinking a glass of water between drinks and before going to sleep.
Get Enough Sleep
Alcohol consumption interferes with your sleep pattern impairing both sleep quality and duration. Lack of adequate sleep isn’t directly related to hangovers but they are linked to irritability and fatigue. Getting plenty of sleep can help your body to recover from heavy drinking.
Eat a Hearty Breakfast
Hangovers become a major cause for concern for those suffering from low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemic). Avoid those headaches and nausea by having a nutritious breakfast or a late night meal.
Hangovers are caused by low-grade inflammation which can be easily cured by the right type of supplements. Many plant-based food and medicinal herbs as well as, some anti-inflammatory drugs are found to reduce the intensity of hangovers
