1)The age old salt water gargle
Momma was right when she administered the salt water gargle to us, every time we had a condition of sore throat. This is because sore throat if we explain scientifically is a congestion of the mucous membranes in our throat. The membranes are inflamed and swollen, which causes the pain and the annoying itchiness. Salt water gargle helps decrease the same, and the water from the mucus membranes are drawn out; the cells are thus shrunk and the pain is done away with. If there are excess mucus pockets around, they too would be removed. A teaspoon of tablesalt in a cup of warm water should be mixed. Ensure the water is lukewarm so as not to burn the throat when gargling. Gargle with this mixture thrice a day.
Apple cider vinegar is a wonder potion that works for everything lifestylish and healthwise, so why not mention the same for our sore throat remedies too. Since it is anti-microbial and anti-bacterial by nature, its high acidic levels can help diminish the growth of bacteria in our throat with utmost efficiency. If you don’t fancy the taste of ACV, you can mix a teaspoon of honey with the same. What you need is a teaspoon of honey, with a cap of ACV and a glass of warm water. Mix the three well and sip it thrice a day when lukewarm. This helps soothe the inflamed membranes and also helps defeat the pesky bacteria causing the pains.
Cayenne or pepper cayenne powder can be a very potent agent in helping find relief for bad sore throat issues. This is because, cayenne has a chemical compound in it – CAPSAICIN. The chemical compound in question helps with temporary pain relief- acts as though you have just popped in an aspirin. Cayenne is known to hinder P- a substance that transmits signals of pain to the brain. What you can do is to mix a teaspoon of cayenne pepper in a jug of warm water and stir well with a tablespoon of honey. Drink this tea thrice a day; it might sting the throat a bit, but that is what the working of cayenne is all about. If you don’t fancy consuming this tea, please gargle thrice or four times with this potion which can help as well.
4)Cloves to the rescue
For many centuries now, cloves have been used as a medicinal spice to treat many illnesses; the Chinese swear by it. There was a time when almost every dentist in china and across asia too swore by the anaesthetic properties of cloves; some still do so today. Why is it so? This is because it has a substance called EUGENOL- a pain killer – a gift from nature. When you chew on cloves, the spice being a natural anti bacterial agent kills the bacteria in the swollen mucus membranes. This helps slowly release the substance called eugenol too, and helps numb the throat pains and swelling as well. A piece or two of cloves should be chewed before you sleep at night when you have a bad sore throat, so you don’t wake up in the middle of the night coughing away!
The components in chamomile are useful for many reasons- healthwise we want more anti-bacterial agents to consume, which chamomile brings. And this also makes the pains go away soon as well, because chamomile is an anti-inflammatory agent too. In addition to that, chamomile tea can be an anti-spasmodic agent, which helps sooth the muscles and make them relax as well. This means, you wouldn’t be coughing with swollen muscles anymore. The wonder herb should be mixed in a cup of boiling water and brewed with a tablespoon of honey. Honey helps moisturize the throat area. Strain and make the tea as you normally do, and consume it warm.
