Muscle pain can pop up because of fatigue, dehydration, stress or injury. Muscle cramping can also be due to reduced blood flow, lack of potassium, calcium and magnesium or due to consuming certain medications. You can also suffer from a sprain, which can be quiet painful.


Here are some remedies to reduce the pain due to muscle cramps and aches:

1) Epsom salt

If something works wonders on reducing muscle aches and cramps, it is Epsom salt. It is better to use warm water for this purpose. A cup of Epsom salt can be added to the water but the pain is to severe, try adding 2 cups. Soak in the water till it cools down and do so thrice a week. However, this remedy is not for those who have high BP, diabetes or heart disease.

2) Use cold and heat

Take a bath with warm water to relax the muscles. If there is bruising or inflammation, you can apply an ice pack on the area that is affected for 20 minutes. Don’t apply the ice pack directly as it can harm you, instead wrap it in a piece of cloth and apply. This way soreness and swelling gets reduced on the injured area.

A low level of magnesium in the body can cause muscle aches and pains. Consume foods that are rich in magnesium such as pumpkin seeds, black beans, flax seeds, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, cocoa and spinach.

4) Using apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is known to be good for treating muscle aches and pains. Mix 1-2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and then drink it up. But be careful that you don’t end up with a sore throat! You can also rub apple cider vinegar directly on the affected body part.

Several blends of essential oils can be used to treat muscle aches. The most commonly recommended blends for muscle cramps are peppermint mixed with lemongrass, marjoram, and deep blue. The blends recommended for spasms are roman chamomile, basil, marjoram and deep blue. Those who happen to suffer from muscle tension are advised to use blends like pepper mint, lavender, roman , marjoram, chamomile, helichrysum, and deep blue. One to two drops of each blend are mixed with a carrier (which can be coconut oil or olive oil) and thus is applied to the affected region.

People having sore muscles due to long hours of sitting in the same position should move around a bit. Muscles can get awfully stiff if a single position is assumed for long. So, move around, walk, stand up and stretch in between. It will be helpful in reducing muscle tension and stiffness.
