Hello All!!!

Are you suffering from bad breath or are just on a look out for ways to improve your oral hygiene? How do you zero in on a mouthwash? Just by its colour I believe :P. You shouldn’t be choosing your mouthwash just based on the flavour. Read the ingredients list instead and make a smart choice for yourself!

Here’s how to choose your mouthwash based on your need:

To prevent cavities and tooth decay

If you get a lot of cavities, you need a mouthwash that has fluoride in it. Fluoride is usually added to toothpastes and mouthwashes as it helps reduce tooth decay by as much as 51 percent. Using a fluoride mouthwash daily will help strengthen your teeth. However, don’t ever swallow your mouthwash as too much of fluoride intake can result in enamel pitting. Choose a mouthwash that has sodium fluoride between the range of 0.05 to 0.2 percent.

To fight bad breath

Xylitol is a common sugar substitute but is not added to mouthwashes as a sweetener alone. You need a constant flow of saliva in order to control bad bacteria present in the mouth and this is why individuals with a dry mouth suffer from bad breath. Now, xylitol increases the production of saliva and this will restore healthy acidity levels in the mouth. This is why a mouthwash with xylitol will get rid of bad breath. Studies also say that mouthwashes with xylitol in them can prevent tooth cavities.

To treat bleeding gums and fight plaque

Poor oral hygiene can turn other people off. If you happen to have things like bleeding gums, cavities, bad breath and plaque, your dentist will recommend the usage of a mouthwash that has chlorhexidine in it. This particular antiseptic chemical helps in fighting bacteria and also has an anti-fungal action. It also possesses anti-plaque properties. You should be on a look out for a mouthwash that has Chlorhexidine digluconate between 0.12 to 0.2 percent.

To kill bacteria

Alcohol has been a regular ingredient in mouthwashes due to its antibacterial powers. It is also a solvent for other ingredients of a mouthwash. Even though alcohol kills bacteria in the mouth, dentists are of the opinion that you should limit the use of mouthwashes that have alcohol in them, unless it has been prescribed to you.

The reason why you should limit its usage is that alcohol has astringent properties that can actually increase bad breath if used regularly. Studies also point towards the risk of oral cancer, but further research is required.

Should You Switch To A Soft Toothbrush

Find your problem with your oral health and face it head on. Along with using a mouthwash, you also need to brush your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once in the night. Dental hygiene is very important for your well-being and that is why you should make the customary trip to the dentist to get your teeth and gums checked.

May your smile be flawless and happy with the right mouthwash!
