Right Ways To Eat Before Bed For Weight Loss And Body Building
There is one controversial question in the nutrition world and that is- what time should you have the last meal before going to bed? In a typical scenario, those who want to lose weight skip their pre-bed meal and those who want to build their bodies rely on a pre-bed meal in order to feed their muscles overnight. You see both the approaches cannot be deemed right or wrong. There are several factors that have to be considered while planning the final meal of the day.
Eating late- A myth!
People think that eating a meal within a few hours of hitting the sack can result in weight gain. It is a huge myth. It is your total calorie intake that determines whether you gain or lose weight and not the time you eat. Your body’s metabolism does not stop when you sleep, so your food doesn’t get converted to fat. Even the claim that eating carbs late at night get converted to fat is false.
Eating before bed to lose weight
In order to lose weight, you must create a calorie deficit i.e. consume less calories and burn more. According to USDA, it is advised that weight maintenance calorie intake for active men should be between 2400 and 3000 calories per day and for active women between 2000 and 2400 calories. To lose weight, you have to go below it. If you have had your calorie quota for the day, a pre-bed meal will have an adverse impact on your weight loss, but if you happen to have a few calories to spare you can have a small meal safely! If you have the habit of eating something before going to bed at night, just leave a few calories from your quota for that particular meal and it won’t affect your weight loss goals.
Eating before bed for bodybuilders
Building muscle slightly contradicts weight loss. This is because you need extra calories to build mass. While bulking up having a pre-bed meal could actually be beneficial. It all comes down to calories again. If you feel you are falling short of your daily calorie targets when increasing muscle mass, you need that last meal of the day before bed to keep you in the muscle building mode. However, if you are already in your calorie limits, an extra meal will not be of any use. Having a protein shake before bed is helpful for athletes for muscle recovery. So, you can save some calories during the day to allow yourself a glass of pre-bed protein shake.
More points on pre-bed meals
Eating before going to bed or not is a matter of your own personal preference and that of your diet and calorie intake during the day. If you start getting cravings late at night, you have the choice of snacking healthy instead of munching on a bag of chips. Don’t snack mindlessly. Similarly, if you are eating before bed and that makes you feel to full or bloated and gives you a disturbed sleep, you can implement give yourself a few hours before hitting the sack.
