What exactly are pores?
Pores are tiny holes on your skin’s surface and are found all over the body. Pores on your face are larger and release oil whereas the ones on your body release sweat and are much smaller than those on your face. Your pores get noticeable in areas where more oil is produced and i.e. the forehead and nose. If you happen to have large pores, it is primarily because of genetics. Those with darker skin tones usually have larger pores when compared to lighter skin tones. Also, those who have a dry skin have smallest pores as they do not produce too much oil.
It is genetics that determine the size of pores but there are certain factors that make them look even bigger as they are:

1) Make sure your skin is clean
Anything that is applied to the face can enter the pores. This includes dirt, makeup and moisturizers. Try to avoid wearing makeup all the time. As soon as you reach home remove your makeup and cleanse your face.
Cleaning and moisturizing is a usual part of your skin care routine but have you ever exfoliated? It is essential. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells that can block your pores.
Choose a scrub that is not too harsh on your skin. There are many gentle exfoliating scrubs available in the market. Don’t use it daily, just thrice a week would do.
3) Apply a clay face mask
A clay face mask is a great idea once or twice a week especially for those who have an oily skin and large pores. Multani mitti or Fuller’s earth is known to absorb excess oil and unclog the pores.
4) Facial steaming
When you have a blocked nose, you usually do facial steaming. However, you can also use it for removing dirt and oil from the pores from your face. It is said that the heat from steam opens the pores and the water droplets clean out the debris in them.
5) Wear sunscreen
Wearing sunscreen can protect your skin from damage. Sun exposure is said to age your skin and reduce its elasticity, this causes lose pores. Choose a sunscreen with a high SPF for maximum protection.
6) Apply yoghurt as a mask
There may be a lot of products in the market that claim to shrink your pores but there is something right in your fridge that is equally good. Yoghurt is said to dissolve impurities present in the pores. The probiotic type of yoghurt balances the good bacteria of the skin. You can simply apply it directly to your face for 10 minutes and then rinse it off with clean water.
7) Cleanse your skin with cucumber
Cucumber juice is said to have astringent properties i.e. it can shrink pores. Simply extract the juice of a cucumber and apply it onto your skin with a cotton ball and leave it for 15 to 20 mins. Wash it off with cold water.
