These glands are found on top of the kidneys and release hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.

Under severe and chronic stress the adrenal glands can remain in the ‘on’ position and produce extra amounts of the stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol). If this scenario goes on for long the adrenals can get depleted and throw many things out of balance.

1) You are unable to sleep

If we were to live in a perfect world, we would get a sound sleep each night and wake up all refreshed and move throughout the day with lots of energy. However, what we instead do is just rush from one thing to the next, every day and that throws us off hormonal balance, making it tough to fall asleep or stay asleep.

What to do: Try to go to bed before 10 p.m. Even if you cannot fall asleep, lie down in bed in a dark room in order to start melatonin production. It will help you in getting into a healthy sleep rhythm.

2) You have dark circles

It can be due to insufficient sleep. Dark circles can crop up due to stressors such as emotional stress, fatigue or dehydration that disrupt healthy blood circulation. It starts showing through the under-eye skin. If you have a sunken, hollowed-out look too, then there can be an even more serious issue with your kidneys.

What to do: Slow down if you are overworked or exhausted. Using a concealer won’t do!

3) Your menstrual cycle can be off

Your adrenal fatigue can probably be due to issues with your thyroid and menstrual cycle. The reason is that the endocrine system (which includes the adrenal glands) is being exposed to endocrine-disrupting chemicals. According to a study, women put 515 chemicals on themselves each day.

What to do: Hormones cannot be spot treated. You need to look at the whole lifestyle and avoid getting exposed to chemicals that disrupt the body.

4) You are stressed out

For women self-care is the last thing on their list of priorities. They stay completely stressed by their day-to-day lives and don’t care about themselves till their body can’t handle it all.

What to do: Get rid of all that drains you but does not support you such as unsupportive people in your life. Your needs should be your first priority. Have fun and bring down the stress as it will take loads off the adrenal glands.

5) You feel stiff, puffy and sore

When you are under constant stress, your adrenals get tired and there is a fall in cortisol levels leaving you feel puffy, stiff and achy in the joints and muscles.

What to do: Visit the doctor and get your adrenals evaluated

6) You are exhausted after exercise

Instead of getting a boost, if you feel fatigued after your session of exercise, it can be because of sluggish adrenal glands

What to do: Try a hand at gentle yoga, meditation, walking or things that make you feel less stressed.

7) You are groggy till afternoon

Adrenal glands emit pulses of the hormone cortisol all day but its pattern can be changed owing to stress and chemical exposure. This may not let you get energy till afternoon.

What to do: Ditch caffeine and reach out for foods that have essential fatty acids, coconut oil, avocado, buckwheat and the like.

8) Your diet and digestion are off track

If the body is not getting what it requires or the food consumed is creating drastic fluctuations in blood sugar, it is like giving a punishment to the adrenals. Also, bloating and poor digestion are the probable symptoms of adrenal fatigue.

What to do: Cut back on processed foods, refined sugar, maida and eat more of healthy fats, fresh fruits, veggies and fermented foods.
