Ways To Stay Properly Hydrated
You must have heard health experts say a zillion times that you need to be well hydrated. The truth is that water is essential for our survival. Water is needed by every cell, tissue and organ to work efficiently. Water is known to regulate the body temperature, lubricate your joints, transport nutrients and remove toxins and wastes from your body. Even if there is a 5% drop in the water levels of the body can lead to a 30% loss of energy. Imagine!
To stay well hydrated, you need to drink water that amounts to half of your body weight in ounces every day. Do you know that dehydration makes the toxins get reabsorbed by your body? This stresses your liver and weakens your immune system. You would not want this to happen to your body, right?
Here are foods and drinks you need to avoid for staying hydrated,
Alcohol and caffeinated beverages
Bad news for coffee and tea lovers! Tea and coffee along with alcohol and energy drinks are diuretics. A diuretic is something that increases urine flow and flushes water out of the body. This can eventually cause dehydration.
Drinks containing high amounts of sugar can cause water loss as they create an acidic environment that impairs the function of enzymes and decrease the water storing capacity of the body.
Salty foods are a culprit behind loss of fluids as extra water is needed to get rid of all the extra amount of sodium you ingest. You should remember that foods that are high in sodium include processed and packaged foods.
Here is how to stay properly hydrated all day long,
Choose the right water bottle
Carry a large water bottle with, preferably that of glass. Avoid the plastic bottle as it has a harmful BPA in it.
Drink treated water
The water consumed by you should be of good quality. It is very important to drink water that has been treated and is free of disease causing microbes, pollutants, toxins and heavy metals. You need to invest in a good quality water purifier.
Consume lots of fruits and veggies
Fruits such as watermelon and strawberries contain 90% of water in them. Other fruits that are hydrating are grapefruit, peaches and melons. Coming to the veggies that have good water content in them, cucumbers and lettuce are a good choice with 96% of water content. Other hydrating veggies are radish, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, zucchini and spinach. Just include them in your every day diet.
Add electrolytes and minerals
Electrolytes have an essential role to play in hydration as they contribute a lot to fluid regulation, nerve function and muscle contraction in the body. You can find electrolytes in sea veggies and coconut water as they have high levels of potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium. You can even add a pinch of Himalayan salt to your water for an electrolyte boost.
Consume soups and broths
Soup has water along with veggies and seasoning in it. Make it fresh and do not go in for canned stuff as it has loads of sodium and is less nutritious. To your soup add a lot of hydrating veggies.
