Sunscreens have side effects – Really?

In general, sunscreen lotions and creams do not have negative side effects and are very important when you step out in the sun. The basic function of a sunscreen is to protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays. However, if you have the tendency of developing an allergy or acne to any ingredient listed on the label, then overuse of that can lead to skin eruptions or an acne flare up. This means that if you happen to have a sensitive skin, you should pick up your sunscreen only after consulting your skin doctor.

Sunscreen Ingredients –

Sunscreens generally contain titanium dioxide, talc, zinc oxide, kaolin, magnesium oxide and calcium carbonate. There are newer chemical compounds namely bemotrizinol, avobenzone, bisoctizole, benzophenone-3 and octocrylene that are broad spectrum agents and are effective against a wider range of the harmful rays of the solar spectrum.

The composition and strength of the sunscreen depends on the components.

If you are not having an allergy to any cosmetic compound, then you can start using a sunscreen up to an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30. For the Indian skin type, a sunscreen with SPF 30 is the perfect choice. You can as well invest in a sunscreen with a higher SPF but that is of no use as it will only burn a whole in your pocket.

There are some sunscreens that make your skin feel dry and parched. This is chiefly because the sunscreen has a drying agent in them. In order to keep your skin moisturized, you need to apply a coat of moisturizer prior to applying your sunscreen.

As the main job of sunscreens is to protect you from UV rays, it can affect the absorption of Vitamin D. This can be one of the reasons why people suffer from the deficiency of vitamin D. However, there are also vitamin D enriched sunscreens. Dermatologists are of the opinion that you can have vitamin D pills once a fortnight to get your required dose of it.

There are no more side effects of applying sunscreens. However, if you have any skin trouble due to usage of a sunscreen, you should consult the dermatologist.
