The cancer and talcum powder link

Johnson & Johnson’s has denied all the charges but has lost 2 lawsuits last year. The court has ordered it to pay USD 127 million as a penalty. The company has also been in the spotlight for marketing baby shampoos that have carcinogens in them!

The sad part is that most of us are blissfully unaware about the lawsuits and Johnson & Johnson’s is still the most trusted brands in baby care in our country!

Looking at the scientific evidence to find a link between use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer, there is no consensus. However, there are several studies that point towards a cancer risk. The point to be noted is that the findings were powerful enough to convict the company in court.

Experts say that talc can be a risk factor for cancer as theoretically it is possible for talcum powder to travel via the vagina to the ovaries. This can cause inflammation. Ovarian inflammation is known to increase the chances of cancer.

How Johnson & Johnson’s covered up the whole thing?

Though the scope of talcum powder as a carcinogenic substance (i.e. cancer causing agent) is not close to that of tobacco, the way it all has been covered up by the company is unethical. Talcum powder or baby powder has been marketed as a product useful for women too. It is said to be used by women as a personal hygiene product to control body odour and moisture in the private areas.

The most shocking part is the fact that Johnson & Johnson was well aware of the possibility of baby powder to cause ovarian cancer for several decades but it still kept marketing the powder for women! The wordings of a company memo published in 1992 are as follows:

“Negative publicity from the health community on talc (inhalation, dust, negative doctor endorsement, cancer linkage) continues.”

Talcum powder – Health risks

When you look at the risks of using talcum powder, you should note that the product is often laced with asbestos which is a well known carcinogen. Researchers have also found talcum in some of the ovarian tumours that were dissected by them back in 1970s. While asbestos is a banned ingredient now, the safety of the product is still questionable.

However, if you are using talcum powder, do not panic. As already mentioned above, the evidence is not conclusive. However, consumers have the right to be informed so that they take better informed decisions. Think twice before using talcum powder!
