Tips to overcome fear of food

Hello All!

It is a good habit to eat healthy food and avoid junk food. But what happens when you go over the top and get into ‘I eat only nutritious food’ mode? It simply plays havoc on your social life. What if your friend says “ No sugar, no dairy, no gluten, no fried food, no fizzy drinks, no meat”? Would you like to lunch with her? A big NO, right?

Over a period of time people get obsessed with healthy eating and develop a fear towards other food. For example, a woman might shun sugar from her diet as she fears that she would die because of it. Here she relates her fear of death with sugar consumption, while this is not true.

Tips to overcome fear of food

Break the rules

If you have made strict rules for yourself, it is time you break them. For a marriage to be successful and healthy you need to make little compromises. Similarly on the food front you need to switch from being ‘rigid’ to being ‘flexible’. You can help yourself by eating a wide variety of food rather than sticking to just one group of diet foods. Take baby steps in the direction of change. Try eating something different once in a while and when you see that nothing happens to you it will help in breaking the rigidity.

Trust yourself

There are certain people who feel that they can’t control themselves when it comes to certain favourite foods. They try weird tricks to keep themselves from indulging. You should not feel that it your fault that you are craving chips and ice cream. It’s natural as eating carbohydrates boosts the levels of serotonin, the feel-good hormone. Maybe as a kid you loved chips and ice-cream and you have some great memories connected to them. Listen to your body’s cravings and do give in a little. It is ok 🙂

Don’t be too harsh on yourself

Just because you gave in to the temptation of eating a cupcake it doesn’t mean that you should curse yourself. If you are on the heavier side, constantly thinking that being fat is a sort of failure and people mock at you then you should probably change that thought as follows:

‘Nobody is perfect. My family loves me!’

That would probably reduce your fear of food that belongs to the fattening group.

Leave the ‘I want to be skinny’ slogan behind

It has been found that 90% of women don’t like their mirror images. Alright everybody wants to look svelte and toned like Deepika Padukone but should you be spoiling your health for that? It is your desire to be skinny that is causing you to fear food that can be fattening.

Liquid diets and crash diets are not advisable for everybody, it might even backfire. You might set your body on a starve-binge-curse yourself cycle. Negative self talk will not land you on planet slim-trim; instead it will put you down in the dumps. Be nice to yourself and concentrate on happiness and overall well being. Hold yourself high and love yourself for who you are!

  1. I have been there and seen that all— but the difference was that I was getting stuck with the fear of eating more than needed. As a result was logging each and every morsel I was about to eat and weighing food items before eating,… but believe me it was all sickening… I broke that addiction after a while but to come out of it I had to put on back a few lost kilos which I haven’t lost till date. It pains that I was pulled down like that but I feel I am better off now without any unnecessary tension of food and measurements though not as thin as earlier but then who cares. Important is to know your “Happy Weight” and I know mine now. All said and done Vinita good post. 🙂
