1) Set a goal

It is good to set a goal before working you start working out. Is it for more energy? To lose weight? To live longer or just to improve your mood? When you find your workout tough you can remind yourself about the goal. But that should be only a gentle reminder and nothing to force you.

2) Switch your phone off

Dedicate your time to your workout. Treat it as break from daily routine. Stop multitasking like using the phone while exercising as it makes mindfulness impossible. Switch off your phone!

3) Breathe right

Breathing is one of the most powerful tools for mindfulness. When you are exerting a lot while working out, deep breathing would really help. Coming back to mindfulness, you breathe in the present and not in the past or future. Keep checking your breath and try using it as a fuel and reminder to focus on your body.

4) Pay attention to your body

Pay attention to your body. Notice how it feels and respect it. When you begin working out bring your mind to the body. You can choose one part of the body at a time. For instance, if you are running, pay attention to the feet as they hit the ground. In a spinning class, pay attention to your shoulders. This kind of mindfulness is a more relaxed kind of awareness.

5) Pay attention to the external environment

Mindfulness is all about paying attention to what is going on in the present. Start with what is going inside your body and then open your awareness to what is going on around you. Pick up the coolness of the wind, greenery of the grass and the people around you.

6) Relate to pain and discomfort

If you workout hard and stay in the present moment, there are chances that at some particular time you will start encountering pain or discomfort. If you don’t feel so, it means that you are working out in an effective way. Discomfort is natural when you are growing and getting stronger. It indicates that you are going beyond your comfort zone. This type of pain and discomfort should be embraced. Don’t try to run away from it.

However, pain can also be a message of the fact that something is wrong. You need to listen to your body and it will tell you if that pain is a part of the growing process or you need to stop of bring in a change and ease up. You need to treat your pain as a messenger and take care of yourself.

7) Let go

Some people have the sense of being present while letting go of thoughts. What you need to do is to make your body in sync with the mind and be aware. The awareness should be natural and something that can get clouded by busy thoughts.
