What Foods To Eat When You Are Sick?
When you are sick due to any disease – nausea, flu, fever or just cough/cold, last thing on your mind is to eat! Most of us forget that even if we don’t feel like eating anything, we cannot get well until we eat.. and eat healthy. Medicines alone do no good.
Let’s see What Foods To Eat When You Are Sick
Hot tea with Ginger
Nothing works for me like Tea does whether I am down with fever or have sore throat. You can also grind ginger in hot water and add honey to it. Ginger is a natural anti nauseant. It soothes sore throat like a charm. Check out health benefits of ginger.
Fresh Juice
If you are not able to digest anything and have vomiting sensation, a glass of juice can probably help. Please do not drink packaged juices for they do no good. When I feel pukish, orange juice gives me a quick vitamin and anti oxidant dose. It gives me energy since fruit sugar-fructose is easily dissolved in blood.
Homemade Soup
If you have fever and/or cough cold, soup is a hot favorite ! If you have congestion, soup works great. Its always better to have clear soups rather than creamy ones. Dairy can cause more congestion. You can also have broth, simply add a little garlic/ginger to it and enjoy. Sometimes, when I am conjested, can’t smell or taste, I prefer hot and sour soup since its spicy. I feel so much better after having it.
Electrolyte
If you are suffering from
- food poisoning
- vomiting and not able to digest anything, not even water
- loose motions
its extremely important to have electrolytes so that you don’t get dehydrated. When I did not have ready access to glucose when hit by food poisoning, I kept licking on Glucose(Glucon D) till I was taken to doctor.

Few tips to eat when you’re sick
Eat more carbohydrates – you have always seen me bashing carbs 😛 , but since they are energy boosters, they give you much needed energy and a sense of recovery when you are sick.
Eat more protein – Eating more protein is good, it will help your body to increase white blood cells to fight against diseases. If dairy suits you, have warm milk. You could also have fish or chicken in case non veg food does not make you giddy when you’re sick.
Have more fruits/juice – This is needed not only for energy but for more Vitamin C. Vitamin C is much needed for body’s immunity system to get better , especially when you are sick.
Eat small portions and eat often – Digestive system gets a hit when you are sick. So eat small portins and eat frequent meals to keep your energy levels up !
