The number of hours of sleep required is different for every individual. However, people who sleep for less than 6 hours regularly each night are at a risk of suffering from stroke according to a study. Researchers say that people in middle age who didn’t sleep enough were having more chances of suffering from stroke than others who slept for at least 9 hours, even if their weight is healthy and there is no family history of stroke.

The study had more than 5000 participants between the age of 45 and the age of retirement. The participants were monitored for 3 years for as a part of the study.

Participants who slept less than 6 hours each night were the ones who experienced symptoms such as weakness or numbness on one side of the body, loss of vision, dizziness or inability to express themselves verbally or in written form. Scientists who carried out the research said that there is a huge impact of sleep deprivation even after considering age, weight and other major risk factors such as high blood pressure.

The participants in the study were divided into 5 groups according to how many hours they slept at night. They were made to report what they felt like after every six months.

Co-author of the study said that many individuals can suffer from the symptoms mentioned above but they do not recognise them as something that would lead to stroke. They would not even mention it to their doctor.

Unhealthy sleeping habits are known to worsen the symptoms that are recognised internationally as something that put people at risk for stroke. It is a well known fact sleep apnea (a breathing problem that results in poor quality sleep) is linked to strokes.

Another study of several thousand participants done a while ago also linked lack of sleep to an increased incidence of strokes and heart disease. However, the latest study focuses on the early signs and symptoms o stroke that are often ignored. The team of researchers plans to continue monitoring the participants of the study for many more years to come. The head researchers say that it would be good to see whether the early detection of the risk of stroke is helpful or not.

The research is not a final word for the link between sleep and risk of stroke. Older studies suggested that sleeping for less than 6 hours or more than 9 hours at night can increase ones chances of getting a stroke. More research needs to be done in the same line to get some concrete conclusion.
