You must be shocked reading the title. Americans are starving but the way opposite you are thinking right now. America is one of the best fed nations on Earth. They are getting more than required calories but actually they are not getting enough nutrients which are quite essential. This is paradox of their diet but America is now producing food which is much tastier but is less in nutrients. This may be because of the wealth they have but this is resulting in malnourished generation. This is not only happening in America but also in many nations as per a study published in Nature.
“One of the defining characteristics of the modern Western diet is replacing fresh fruits and vegetables with refined carbohydrates and other processed offerings,” says Mike Fenster, M.D., an interventional cardiologist, chef, and author of The Fallacy of the Calorie: Why the Modern Western Diet is Killing Us and How to Stop It, who was not seen involved with this study.
“This diet can be tremendously addictive in a most subtle and unconscious way,” he said. This makes American deprived of nutrients first since they do not contain critical nutrients and are being replaced by poor alternatives. The amount of salt and sugar usage is also rapidly increasing in these processed foods that damage the tastes and makes eat those innutritious foods. This was explained by Mike Fenster.
“These dietary choices directly disrupt our metabolism—in particular, our individual gut microbiomes—and produce a wide range of disabilities and diseases,” Fenster explains. This type of diet disturbs the natural ration of sodium and potassium in the body for starts and this leads to heart disease. Fenster says that the lack of fiber content in diet is one of the main culprits. Both types of fibers, i.e., soluble and insoluble fiber keeps us away from over eating. It also food consumed by good bacteria in the gut. Consuming the healthy bacteria on the gut helps in building immunity, improves mood, prevents inflammation, protects heart and maintains weight. These bacteria can’t survive without fiber.
Fiber bars aren’t the good sources of fiber but plant based natural foods are the best sources of it. We know well that the junk foods are bad and vegetables are good but this isn’t the news here. The study says that these changes in the diet greatly effects health which people aren’t realizing at all. In a survey by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that about 87% of Americans do not consume the required amounts of fruits and almost 91% of Americans skip the vegetables.
People are overly depending on the processed foods which are resulting in many health issues like heart disease, diabetes, etc. As per a study, it is also causing many small health problems such as exhaustion, colds, skin problems, stomach problems, etc. Once all these problems belonged to those who couldn’t even afford food but now it is affecting those who have everything and can afford healthy food.
Disappointing news is that American unhealthy diet is not only affecting them but is also spreading and affecting the other nations. People round the globe are fond of and adapting to their diet. It is surprising that this group of malnourished people eat food which does nothing good for them.
So, avoid these processed foods completely and consume more natural and whole foods. Preparing and taking healthy foods is also not so expensive always. You will feel better both physically and psychologically by doing so.
