Why Desi Ghee is Good for Health?
How many of you hate to eat dry Rotis without any ghee smeared on top? I have seen people having plain Rotis. I have seen people preparing curries in refined oil. Ask them why? You would get to hear that Desi Ghee is fat, so its best avoided. Even I have believed in this myth half my life! You read it right, its a myth that Fats make us fat. So, Desi Ghee does not make us fat.
Desi Ghee is one of the most misunderstood foods in India. Reason? Marketing vegetable oils as the Hero, HUH HUH.
“Healthy heart”, “Light”, “low cholesterol” and a lot of other adjectives are used in the favour of vegetable oils which could contain trans fats and hydrogenated fats.
In our culture of hundreds of years, Indians have been eating Desi Ghee but were never obese. Why do we see more obesity now? It is because we are misled. The truth is Desi Ghee is healthy and important for Weight Loss.
3 Myths about Desi Ghee
-
Ghee increase cholesterol –
You also believed in this, right! The truth is that Desi Ghee reduces cholesterol since it increases the contribution of lipids for metabolism. Desi Ghee helps you de-stress, feel full, and sleep better.
-
Ghee is fattening –
Well since ages we had been listening to grand maas that Desi ghee makes you strong and fit, but never believed. Desi Ghee has a unique short-chain fatty acid structure. It is lipolytic by nature due to which it breaks down fat.
-
Ghee is not heart-healthy –
Are you kidding? Desi Ghee is extremely rich in antioxidants, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and fat-soluble vitamins like A, E, D. Desi Ghee has everything needed for a healthy heart.
Truth…..Let us know the facts now
Why Desi Ghee is Good for Health? Reasons—
- Vitamins A, D, E, and K present in Ghee are fat-soluble. This means Ghee helps is to absorb these vitamins.
- Ghee has MUFA (monounsaturated fatty acids ), which is better than PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acid) found in oils like corn, sunflower, cottonseeds oils, etc. Thus Desi Ghee is a better choice than these oils.
- Ghee does not contain lactose, hence it is safe for lactose-intolerant people.
- Ghee is made up of short-chain fatty acids that can be digested easily. This nature also helps to break fat.
- Ghee provides lubrication to muscles and joints.
- Ghee is free of trans fats, unlike other oils.
- Ghee is free of salt unlike butter available in the market.
- Ghee boosts immunity.
- Ayurveda recommends Desi Ghee because it is good for the whole body.
- Ghee can be used for cooking at high temperatures, unlike Olive Oil. However, a few people believe that Desi Ghee is best consumed when poured on cooked food before consuming. That’s the reason why our grandparents added ghee in daals before eating or poured on Rotis!

I’m reading this article to my mummi 😛
yeah yeah Gowthami. My mum also doesn’t give desi ghee to me and made my paranthas in refined oils and said she doesn’t know why I put on weight 😛
I explained her n now banned refined oil at our home
i am gonna start my ghee, hot dal and rice from now… yummy 😀
Yes Jaanu, you must 🙂
I’m so happy reading this. I love ghee and I mostly like it with dal and sweets. 😀
Mee too 🙂
I love ghee n adore its aroma 🙂 Lovely post Tarun. This sure cleared up many misconceptions
Thanks Nafisa. Ghee is the most misunderstood food I feel
Interesting. But nobody in my entire extended family (mine and husband’s included) makes ghee anymore at home. Why? Because everyone buys toned milk which hardly yields any cream or tetra pack milk which needn’t be boiled. So the only ghee we use is store bought ghee. And the smell of ghee being made makes most of us at home nauseous! Its probably been a decade or more since anyone made ghee at home. Chalo, store bought ghee hi sahi. Something better than nothing.
Preeti, Try Govardhan Ghee. My mum said its better than the rest of the packed ghee available in market.
Very Informative ! And it surely will help a lot of people clear their misconceptions about ghee 🙂
Welcome to IWB Rahul 🙂

Hey Tarun Preet,
I have recently started following this blog. Wish you & ur team ATB.. 🙂
Nice & informative posts. With this post my misconception with ‘Ghee’ is now clarified. Just a doubt popped on my mind-
“At times we do require the use of Oil, so how is Virgin Olive Oil than any other refined oil?”
Thanks
Hi Tarun Preet
nice post really
I have recently started following this blog. Wish
you & ur team good luck
I’m confuse between olive oil and desi ghee because extra virgin olive oil nutritional information per 100 ml is approx. 70gm monosaturated fat , 15 gm polyunsaturated fat and 15 gm of saturated fat. And here is nutritional information of desi ghee per 100gm approx. 65-70gm of saturated fat , 15-25gm of monosaturated fat and only 5-10gm of polyunsaturated fat. Now, we all know in nutritional information extra virgin olive oil is much better than desi ghee because unsaturated fat(monos; and polyunsaturated fat) is good for our health which are higher extra virgin olive oil and lower in desi ghee and saturated fat is a bad fat which is lower in extra virgin olive oil and higher in desi ghee. both contains 0% trans fat. and I have seen that fats high in mufa are good for losing weight and burning fat from all our body and slim our belly. but yes, desi ghee contains CLA which is not included in
extra virgin olive oil. but I don’t think that only for these reason we should take desi ghee. So, I want to loss weight and burn fat so which is good for me on dinner dal fry in your opinion? Please Reply…
Thank You
please tell me Tarun Preet I’m waiting for you…
Prabhav, sorry for late reply.
I am impressed that you have researched so much. Olive oil turns rancid at higher temperature. Its not suitable for frying or cooking. But its the best for sauteeing salads.
Ghee also is best when put directly over rotis or daals. But it still can be used for making tadka’s. You would see Indian ladies using desi ghee tadka in some veggies. You cant use olive oil in this case.
I hope i was able to answer your query
Yes, you are right but I have seen many people who prepare daal tadka with olive oil. We normally prepare daal tadka not so deep fry…so which is best because I’m afraid for using desi ghee because of its high saturated fat content I want to loss weight and fat and build lean muscles…..so please tell me what should I do? I hope you will give me a helpful answer.
Thank You
Prabhav, use olive oil only for salads. It cannot beat heat. 1/2 tablespoon ghee everyday will do no harm. Instead, it will help you burn your fat 🙂
Thank you so much Tarun Preet now I understood that I should take desi ghee
home made ghee is the best 🙂
i make desi ghee at home for my boys…will start having it too..only in a while love ghee added to sambhar and rice…yummy
wow , I love ghee in sambhar 😀
Really unique and thought provoking info. Keep it up guys nd thanks for sharing such valuable info
The only eatable i cant resist is MOM made desi ghee de parathe 😀
Very informative post. I was afraid of consuming ghee out of the fear that it might turn out to be a danger for my cardiac system. But what you have shared is right and many reachers also agree to the fact that Ghee poses no danger to cardiac health if the total fat intake is restricted to the prescribed limit And that ghee monosaturated compound is also one of its great benefits. Thank you for sharing.
