Why Women Should Quit Smoking
The statutory warning against cigarette smoking is found everywhere, on TV, in the papers and every other media. Do you pay heed to it? Being a non-smoker I do but I don’t know whether smokers do! Apart from cancer, stroke, diseases of the lungs and heart, smoking causes several other health problems for women. Read on.
Why women should quit smoking?
If you are a smoker I will give you not just one but 11 solid reasons to quit smoking right now.
1. Bone density decreases
Post menopausal women smokers suffer from lower bone density. When compared to other women, smokers are more likely to break their bones.
2. Chances of getting rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease of the joints. Women who smoke have more chances to get rheumatoid arthritis. People suffering with this disease have swelling and pain in their joints.
Cataract is an eye disease in which the lens of the eye becomes cloudy. Women smokers have more chances to get cataract that can be detrimental to their vision.
4. Gum disease
How about losing your teeth due to smoking? You would probably lead the rest of your life with dentures! This happens due to gum disease and that is directly linked to smoking.
Smokers suffering with gum disease also have chances to get ulcers in the stomach. Stomach ulcers lead to death.
The post surgery survival rate of smokers is very poor. They tend to have poor wound healing and more complications when compared to non-smokers.
Nicotine found in cigarette smoke affects the neurotransmitter activity in the brain. This leads to an increased risk of depression. It has been found that women smokers are more likely to suffer from depression than men.
8. Menstrual problems
Studies have shown that smoking in women results in having more painful and irregular periods. I am sure you wouldn’t want that to happen. There is nothing more annoying than having irregular periods.
Smoking seems to have anti- estrogen effect on the body. Women smokers have more chances to go through menopause at a younger age than women who don’t smoke. The symptoms of menopause for smokers are worse.
Women who smoke may find it difficult to conceive. Smokers have a higher chance of losing their baby before it is born. The truth is that every time a woman smokes she is risking the life of the unborn child in her womb. Smoking restricts proper supply of oxygen to the baby and this makes the unborn baby’s heart to work harder. Studies have also shown that there are chances of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in babies born to women smokers. If nothing else scares you, this definitely should!
Smoking causes several breathing complications. Lungs of teen aged girls do not grow as much as a non-smoker’s lungs. When it comes to adult women smokers, their lungs don’t work as well as non-smokers’ lungs.
I hope you would share this with your loved ones to let them know why women should quit smoking.
