Mild dehydration masks itself as a feeling of hunger while your body actually needs fluids. This confusion occurs in the part of the brain that controls appetite as well as thirst. When you get dehydrated, the wires of thirst and hunger get crossed and you grab a pack of biscuits instead of reaching out for the bottle. To settle this keep yourself well hydrated. When you feel hungry and you haven’t consumed fluids the whole day, drink a glass of water and see for 15 minutes, if the hunger subsides, you were just thirsty.
Sleep plays a major role in hunger. Very less sleep raises the levels of the hormone ghrelin that stimulates appetite and decreases in the levels of leptin, a hormone that provides the feeling of satiety. Lack of sleep for a long duration can give you a ravenous appetite. The body becomes desperate for a shot of energy and that is why there is a craving for sugar carbs. Try to sleep for 7 to 8 hours of sleep to keep your appetite on track.
Eating too much starchy carbs
The simple carbs found in sugary foods made out of white flour like pastries and cookies spikes the levels of your blood sugar really quick and then they plunge down later. The plunge in blood sugar causes lots of hunger and that too for sugary carbs. To ward off hunger pangs opt for healthier options like almonds, chia seeds, apples and pistachios.
When you are tensed or stressed out, the production of stress hormones namely cortisol and adrenaline increases. The elevated levels of the hormones makes your body think that it is under attack and this drastically increases your appetite. Stress can reduce the levels of the brain chemical serotonin and make you feel hungry. Try going for a Yoga class or listen to soft music to relieve yourself of the stress.
Drinking too much alcohol
Having alcohol before dinner can stimulate hunger even if the stomach is full. Studies say that people consume more foods with high calories after consuming alcohol. Moreover, it has a dehydrating effect that can trick a person into thinking that he/she needs food when in reality they are thirsty. Try to make your cocktails in water so that you stay hydrated.
You require more protein and fat
Eating lean protein and healthy fat will ward off hunger pangs. Protein stays in the tummy for long and makes you feel full. It is known to suppress your appetite. Just like protein even healthy fat can give you feelings of satiety. Include more nuts, oils and seeds in your diet along with avocados.
Some people skip breakfast or another major meal of the day and this is not good. When you happen to skip a meal, your stomach stays empty for too long and this affects your hunger hormone, ghrelin. It later results in binge eating. Try not to leave a gap of more than 4-5 hours between meals. And talking about breakfast, you should eat something in the morning within 1 hour of waking up.
