Reasons

There are several different reasons that make a person feel light-headed or nauseous after a workout. If you happen to exercise too much or at a very high intensity, it puts stress on your body and you don’t let it recover. It can be possible that you did not prepare yourself well for exercise by warming up and cooling down. It affects heart rate and blood pressure. Dehydration can be a problem too if you sweat a lot but don’t drink sufficient fluids while exercising. If you exercise on an empty stomach or a stomach that is too full, it is possible that you suffer from nausea and dizziness.

Signs

You may witness signs before or during your workout session that indicate you should slow down or not exercise at all that day. The signs are feeling fatigued, getting insufficient sleep or having body aches for absolutely no reason. Also, feelings of thirst and hunger can cause issues during or after the workout. You may find your heart rate or blood pressure to be higher than normal and you might not be able to converse while exercising.

Any of the above can lead to a feeling of nausea and light-headedness post workout.

Exercise guidelines

It is recommended that you begin your session with a warm up. This makes your body prepare for exercise and increases your body temperature. Increase the exercise intensity slowly till you feel that your exercise is moderate to hard and not unbearable. In order to avoid over-training, you gradually need to increase the duration of the exercise. Don’t forget to cool down at the end of your exercise session as it is helpful in bringing your heart rate, body temperature and blood pressure back to normal.

Food and fluids

Before an hour or two before exercise, eat a small meal that has 200 to 300 calories. You might need to try out different kinds of foods to find out what works well for your body. But you need to fuel your body before exercise in order to avoid feeling ill afterwards. Water is enough to avoid dehydration if you happen to drink it before and during the workout. If your workout lasts for more than an hour, you may need to drink a sports drink in order to replace the carbs and electrolytes you lost due to sweating. Whatever you drink, drink it in sips instead of gulps.

Things to take into consideration

If you were ill, don’t just jump back to exercising all of a sudden. Pay attention to your body’s signals and slowly bring your workout session to the level it was before you had fallen sick. If you have an existing health condition or are under medication, discuss with your doctor before exercising.
