Winter Self Care With Ayurveda!
Hello All!!!!!
Winter – the season of vata, is here! According to Ayurveda, the energy of movement and air is called vata. It affects both the mind and body.
There are some winter self care rituals that you need to follow during winters to stay warm, nourished, grounded and calm. Ancient texts say that there can be the following difficulties in this season:
- Digestive problems
- Sleeping disruptions
- Dry and irritated skin
- Low appetite
- Muscles and joint pain
There can also be fear, anxiety and inability to focus during this season.
Here are the self care rituals that you should consider following:
1) Follow a routine
In the vata season, it is important to follow routines. Go to bed by 9 pm or 10 pm max. Follow a routine with regard to your meals too. By following routines, you will improve your health on the whole.
2) Go in for a digital detox
Activities that affect your nerves like watching news or using a tab or smart phone can aggravate vata. Science proves that electronic lights affect circadian rhythm and melatonin production. You can instead read a book (not kindle 😉 ) and keep electronics in another room.
3) Meditate
Neuroscientists show that meditation can help people focus and it reduces pain. Both of these issues can be a problem in winters. Meditate every evening to soothe your nerves and prepare yourself better for sleep. Try om chanting and rekindle the spirituality in you.
4) Drink warm beverages
Warm beverages provide you comfort and help you relax. Skip coffee and tea and go in for warm milk or alternatives like almond milk, soy milk or rice milk. You can even add warm spices like cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, nutmeg and cumin to your drink. Drinking ginger tea is also good for digestion.
5) Massage your body with oil
In ayurveda, it is always recommended that that you massage yourself with oil. But in the vata season you need it more. Oil reduces dryness of the skin and lubricates the muscles and joints. Use warm oil and there can be nothing better than sesame seed oil. However, you may use any kind of oil. The aim is to soothe your nervous system down and help you sleep better. Even if you are unable to massage the whole body, massage your joints and feet. It will help you sleep better.
6) Use essential oils
If you are not able to sleep at night, you can use essential oils. Diffuse certain oils in the air as they will help you stay grounded, calm and focused. In winters you should use essential oils of geranium, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, jasmine, lemon, oregano, saffron, rose, vanilla, vetiver and sandalwood. Aromatherapy has its own magic.
Follow the above rituals this season and see the difference! Your winter season will be a breeze this year and what can be better than that?
Make the most of this season and enjoy! Always remember, if winter comes can spring be far behind?
