Wonder Berries For Weight Loss
Have you tried any new smoothie recently? Smoothies do taste yum and are out of this world. Tarun had once shared a strawberry and raspberry smoothie on our blog. It was indeed a treat for the eyes and seemed yum ( I say treat for the eyes because I have not tasted it yet!). Berries are really sought after ingredients in smoothies.
The refined, packaged food lifestyle leaves no space for servings of berries. Apart from their other health benefits they are known to support weight loss, provided your meals are well chalked out 😉
Let me brief you about the berries and how they support weight loss.
These berries are not from India but like most berries have a lot of goodness. Aren’t we open-minded enough to embrace them 🙂 ? Yes, they are known to support weight loss when incorporated in a healthy diet. You can read more about them here.
Strawberries are one of the most loved fruits. The colour and taste are very stimulating and appetizing. They can help you lose weight and also control blood sugar.
Scientists believe that a vital antioxidant present in strawberries blocks the activity of an enzyme responsible for breaking starch into simple sugar. That means lesser quantities of simple sugars are released into the blood stream. This in turn lowers the blood sugar and the corresponding insulin response. This is the main point for weight control because insulin transfers excess sugar into fat cells. Amazing right?
Blueberries as the name suggests are blue in colour and are native to North America. Catechins(an antioxidant) found in blueberries is known to activate fat-burning genes in abdominal fat cells to support weight loss. And belly fat loss in particular. I know that belly fat is a major problem for most of the girls. According to research, regularly consuming catechins increases abdominal fat loss by 77 percent and doubles the speed of total weight loss. Sounds like good news!! 🙂
Another wonder berry is the raspberry. Red in colour, they are among the most popular berries grown all over the world.Raspberries have been shown to contain a natural substance called ketones. Ketones are similar to capsaicin. Capsaicin is the compound that gives chillies and hot peppers their spicy nature. Studies at the lab level on mice have found that ketones found in raspberries prevented an increase in overall body fat and visceral fat (abdominal fat), the deep internal belly fat. Such type of fat is known to cause a lot of serious health problems. Even if the studies could not prove anything in the case of humans, you can still enjoy raspberries for their goodness otherwise!
Blackberries are known to be a good part of a weight loss plan because they help fill you up, but are low in calories. Blackberries contain a large amount of water. One cup of raw blackberries provides you with only 62 calories. Blackberries are also packed with dietary fiber, containing 7.6 grams of fiber per cup. Generally high-fiber diets enhance weight loss in obese individuals.
Well, I guess I have covered most of the berries. The only hitch is that except strawberry all the other berries have to be imported. This is because they are not native to India. But that shouldn’t be much of a problem, right? You get them well packed in supermarkets. Some people are even trying to grow them here!
As now you know that berries are good for you, you can enjoy a guilt-free serving each day! Whenever you want something sweet, fat free and delicious just indulge in some berries.
Take care and stay fit 🙂
